Use of ICT in support of language teaching and learning

#ICTREV   #ECML

What is the initiative about?

The ICT-REV initiative promotes a pedagogically-based use of ICT tools and open resources in support of quality language teaching and learning, including online and blended learning settings.  In 2025, the initiative will also offer greater focus on the challenges and opportunities created in the language classroom by the increasing influence of Artificial Intelligence and, in addition, will highlight the role of digital tools in pre-service education. The workshops are structured as blended events which provide training in the application of pedagogical principles in teaching languages with technology and raise awareness of the opportunities for self-training in the use of ICT.

Most of today’s language learners are keenly aware of the huge potential, both on an educational and a general level, offered by digital technologies. The relevance of ICT in language education has become more evident in the light of the enforced move to online teaching during the pandemic. A major challenge for language teachers is to develop concepts for their technology-supported language teaching, part of which is how to identify the appropriate product and accompanying learning activities among the huge palette of tools and materials available. Visibility, peer reviews and recommendations and advocacy can all contribute to promoting an adequate and efficient use of tools and ultimately to cascading expertise and achieving impact.

Target groups

  • teacher educators
  • language teachers with experience of peer training
  • language teachers with a multiplier capacity
  • language policy maker
  • other multipliers

Objectives

The objectives of this initiative are as follows:

To promote the benefits of ICT in language education; To develop a website with an inventory of reviewed tools and open educational resources.

To identify and review a selection of freely available ICT tools and open educational resources which support language teaching and learning;

Teacher educators and teachers are more aware of the potential of digital tools and Artificial Intelligence and are able to assess them critically in order to make efficient, effective and innovative use of such instruments to enhance language learning and teaching in response to individual learner needs.

To provide training and awareness-raising workshops for teachers, education stakeholders and multipliers, focusing on self-training in the use of ICT;

Outputs

The workshops will also feed into the further development of the inventory. Local or regional clusters of multipliers promoting the use of ICT tools and open resources in support of language teaching and learning

Inventory of ICT tools and open educational resources

The ICT-REV project has developed an inventory of freely available online tools and open educational resources for language teaching and learning. The inventory contains a list of tools that have been evaluated with sound pedagogical criteria in mind. These criteria have been developed by teachers for teachers and provide essential information so that you can select appropriate applications and use them with your learners.

Training and awareness-raising workshops

The ICT-REV 2-day workshops provide training for a maximum of 25 participants in the application of pedagogical principles in teaching languages with technology, and raise awareness about the need for self-training in the use of ICT.

Each national training event is specifically adapted and tailored to the needs of the particular country. Participants at these workshops are also specifically selected for their multiplier capacities.

Provision of member state

The member state needs to nominate a local coordinator who will be in close contact with the team. This local coordinator will be responsible for helping the team draw up the initial individualised workshop programme, i.e. they must be aware of the needs on the ground. This person will also be in charge of organising the recruitment of workshop participants. Finally, the local coordinator will need to organise the workshop venue and ensure that it is in line with the requirements agreed with the expert team.
